A porcelain bottle vase of double gourd form on a flared footring with tall narrow neck and the reverse side flat with a slot for hanging. The vase is outlined in underglaze blue and has a six-character Wanli mark in a plaque framed by a polychrome overglaze lotus leaf on the top, and a lotus flower on the bottom. The front is decorated with underglaze blue and polychrome overglaze enamels to depict a pair of phoenixes flying among clouds on the upper bulb, and two phoenixes facing each other among an earthly flower garden on the lower bulb. These are confined between lingzhi-shaped clouds and lotus meander borders, with banana leaf lappets around the rim, all covered in a clear glaze.

Groups of men gamble, smoke, and drink in a dark guardroom. In the left foreground a seated man wearing a red sash lights his white clay pipe, while his companion pauses his smoking to listen to a man standing next to him. The red of the smoker's sash is repeated in the flag and fabrics strewn about in the right foreground, which form part of a still-life of weapons, musical instruments, and glinting armor heaped together against the wall. Between these brightly lit foreground vignettes the scene recedes into the darkened interior where a group of five men gather about a table to gamble.

An open public space dominates the foreground of the image. In that space are several groups of children, particularly at the lower left of the image, a rooster at the lower right, and a water pump at the far side of the square just before the fence. Beyond is a street that recedes into the distance; on either side of the street are picturesque older buildings that face onto the square with banks of windows, overhangs, and steeply pitched rooflines.

Deep porcelain bowl with wide foot, fine body, and colorless glaze.

This high-quality white porcelain bowl is presumed to have been produced at official court kilns around Usan-ri, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggido. The well-levigated clay of finest quality was used for this bowl. Sagger was used to protect the bowl during firing to attain its pure white, immaculate surface. Entire foot of the bowl was glazed, and the foot was placed upon a fine white sand support to make the surface as clean as possible. The outer base is enscribed with Chinese character “天" (“Cheon;” sky, heaven)” by scraping off the glaze. The characters “大” (“Dae;” big; great)” and “黃” (“Hwang;” yellow) have been stippled after firing. Finely fused and sintered, this bowl exemplifies the essence of white porcelain made from offical court kilns, which is robust and white as a white jade.
